Product Safety & Quality
At Greenbrier, safety is the cornerstone of everything we do, guiding both the well-being of our workforce and the integrity of our products. As identified in our 2025 DMA results, Product Safety and Quality, including railcar design and engineering, sourcing efforts, production standards and end-user health and safety, remain among our top priorities.
This year, we:
- Reused, reclaimed or recycled 88,500 U.S. tons of material in our railcar maintenance and modification activities
- Increased recycled steel content in new railcars from 56% to 58%
- Hosted more than 100 audits and 200,000+ hours of safety, quality and technical training
Our People
Greenbrier is deeply committed to our people. We promote employee engagement by nurturing a strong safety culture where employees are empowered to be our top safety champions. Additionally, we are dedicated to providing learning and development opportunities throughout the employee lifecycle at Greenbrier.
This year, we:
- Achieved strong safety results with an incident rate of 1.12 and DART rate of 0.83
- Reported a near-miss rate of 22 after expanding near-miss tracking consistently across the company
- Rolled out mentorship opportunities in the U.S.

Environmental Sustainability
We’re committed to improving our sustainability performance, both by reducing our environmental footprint and by meeting or exceeding the ecological requirements in the countries where we operate. We maintain an Environmental Management System that ensures our adherence to local and national regulations in communities where we operate.
This year, we:
- Reported Scope 3 emissions for the first time
- Hosted a Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) biodiversity screening and hosted reforestation projects in Mexico and Romania
- Introduced new Smart LED lighting projects
Governance and Ethics
At Greenbrier, we believe that strong governance practices and ethical conduct are crucial for earning the trust of our employees, customers, regulators, communities, investors, and partners, while also helping to minimize long-term business risks.
This year, we:
- Launched a new Code of Conduct and provided formal training across global locations
- Earned the “Best ESG (small cap)” award from Governance Intelligence
- Hosted a double materiality assessment (DMA) to reflect priority sustainability topics and inform our strategy

Communities
Greenbrier is a dedicated community partner. We strive to make a positive impact and show up with compassion, consistency and a long-term commitment to the well-being of the communities we serve.
This year, we:
- Contributed 10,000+ volunteer hours and invested nearly $700,000 in Greenbrier’s local communities
- Completed a $500,000 multi-year pledge to help renovate and streamline services at Providence St. Vincent’s Hospital Emergency Room
- Facilitated three Build Days in partnership with Habitat for Humanity
