Safety

Employee safety is a core value at Greenbrier, and our employees are Greenbrier’s strongest safety champions. Together we take steps to reduce risks by improving working conditions, utilizing and obtaining appropriate tools and delivering training on how to minimize workplace risks.

This year, we:

  • Obtained the Company’s best-ever Total Recordable Incident rate at 1.05 and the second-best DART rate at 0.79
  • Introduced a continuous improvement safety initiative, Dynamic Hand Safety
  • Achieved at least one year incident-free at one railcar manufacturing facility and eight railcar maintenance facilities

Environmental Sustainability

We’re committed to improving our sustainability performance, both by reducing our environmental footprint and by meeting or exceeding the ecological requirements in the countries where we operate. We maintain an Environmental Management System that ensures our adherence to local and national regulations in communities where we operate. 

This year, we:

  • Began a pilot solar power project at Greenbrier Tlaxcala in Mexico, working toward the target to reduce Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 20% from 2022 to 2027
  • Reused, reclaimed or recycled nearly 46,000 U.S. tons of steel and specialty components through Sustainable ConversionsTM
  • Increased the number of ISO 14001-certified manufacturing facilities to five

Governance and Ethics

Greenbrier’s leadership is dedicated to sound governance strategies, including inclusive hiring practices and managing business and affairs for the benefit of our stakeholders.

This year, we:

  • Achieved 36% female and 27% ethnically diverse Board composition; in January 2024, these figures are expected to become 44% and 36%, respectively
  • Continued to support the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program
  • Provided an overview of cybersecurity efforts in the report for the first time

Social Improvement

Greenbrier is a proud and active member of the communities we work and live in. We demonstrate our values through our charitable giving and community enrichment programs.

This year, we:

  • Introduced two new Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), for a total of eight
  • Contributed 11,100 volunteer hours and invested more than $1 million in Greenbrier’s local communities
  • Initiated a scholarship fund with Black River Technical College to support students obtaining technical education in Greene County, Arkansas
