Safety
Employee safety is a core value at Greenbrier, and our employees are Greenbrier’s strongest safety champions. Together we take steps to reduce risks by improving working conditions, utilizing and obtaining appropriate tools and delivering training on how to minimize workplace risks.
This year, we:
- Achieved the Company’s best-ever Total Recordable Incident and DART rates at 1.09 and 0.75, respectively
- Exceeded 15 months without an injury at Greenbrier Marmaduke
- Achieved major safety milestones at several of our railcar maintenance facilities, including injury-free periods at six sites across the United States
Environmental Sustainability
We’re committed to improving our sustainability performance, both by reducing our environmental footprint and by meeting or exceeding the ecological requirements in the countries where we operate. We maintain an Environmental Management System that ensures our adherence to local and national regulations in communities where we operate.
This year, we:
- Established a greenhouse gas reduction goal to reduce Scope 2 GHG emissions by 20% over the next five years
- Committed to hosting a 2° Celsius or lower planning event by 2030

Governance and Ethics
Greenbrier’s leadership is dedicated to sound governance strategies, including inclusive hiring practices and managing business and affairs for the benefit of our stakeholders.
This year, we:
- Introduced IDEAL (inclusion, diversity, equity, access and leadership) values to onboarding and retention strategies and the Supplier Code of Conduct
- Initiated six employee resource groups, three times higher than the goal stated in 2021
- Achieved 36% female Board composition
Social Improvement
Greenbrier is a proud and active member of the communities we work and live in. We demonstrate our values through our charitable giving and community enrichment programs.
This year, we:
- Contributed 9,300 volunteer hours and invested more than $1.5 million in Greenbrier’s local communities
- Initiated a scholarship, matched personally by our founder Bill Furman, to endow career and technical education readiness for a high school senior entering the technical field at Portland Community College
