Safety

Employee safety is a core value at Greenbrier, and our employees are Greenbrier’s strongest safety champions. Together we take steps to reduce risks by improving working conditions, utilizing and obtaining appropriate tools and delivering training on how to minimize workplace risks.

This year, we:

  • Standardized safety practices across our domestic and international locations 
  • Worked one million hours without a single injury during fiscal 2021 at one of our largest manufacturing facilities

Environmental Sustainability

We’re committed to improving our sustainability performance, both by reducing our environmental footprint and by meeting or exceeding the ecological requirements in the countries where we operate. We maintain an Environmental Management System that ensures our adherence to local and national regulations in communities where we operate. 

This year, we:

  • Enabled the tracking of our Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions at all of our locations worldwide
  • Used 51% recycled steel content in our freight railcars and marine barges
  • Reduced our water usage to 14 million gallons per year—the annual equivalent of a 25-story office building

Governance and Ethics

Greenbrier’s leadership is dedicated to sound governance strategies, including inclusive hiring practices and managing business and affairs for the benefit of our stakeholders.

This year, we:

  • Were recognized by 50/50 Women on Boards for achieving a high level of Board diversity
  • Achieved 25% racial and ethnic diversity at the Board level
  • Expanded our enterprise risk management system (ERM) across operations

Social Improvement

Greenbrier is a proud and active member of the communities we work and live in. We demonstrate our values through our charitable giving and community enrichment programs.

This year, we:

  • Initiated IDEAL, our diversity, equity and inclusion program
  • Donated over $400,000 to a variety of non-profit organizations
  • Volunteered 7,300 hours
  • Channeled 25% of total philanthropic giving to diversity scholarships
  • Allocated over 50% of annual charitable contributions to communities that align with Greenbrier’s IDEAL commitment
